Neocon — 2014
Held every June in Chicago, Neocon is North America’s largest design and commercial interiors exhibition. Our visit is an opportunity to meet with some of our suppliers, and keep up to date with the latest workspace trends.
The leading international commercial interiors brands have permanent showrooms in the fabulous Merchandise Mart building where Neocon is held – these spaces are hives of inspiration for all things office.
What we saw this year was clearly taking us fast and further down the road away from the traditional one person = one assigned workspace type of office. As someone commented, the office landscape is not just evolving, but dissolving.
Your workstation can be a single-person pod, a two-person chat booth, a communal table, or a lounger. You can meet with others or yourself, wherever it suits.
These spaces have form but fluidity. They have a lot more colour, texture and contrast than the offices most of us are familiar with. The thinking is that this choice and flexibility, breeds creativity and productivity. It’s interesting and inspiring, and is opening the door to a far wider field of furniture for commercial use in the future.
Watch this space – it’s developing fast.
Milan Furniture Fair – 2014
The mood at Milan Furniture Fair 2014 was relaxed and easy-going – just like the furniture. Much of which took its cue from the simplicity and freshness of Scandinavian style. Clean easy lines were softened with rounded corners, while crisp white was warmed with a whole spectrum of sunset colours, from bellini peach and powder pink, to intense indigo and blood orange.
And sitting was as much about enjoying as working. Community space seating was at large in delightful original forms – from wafer-thin timber benches to funky, chunky moulded communal ottomans. It was about meeting or eating in relaxed style, in friendly inviting spaces.
The appetite for timber was still high, with exhibitors all offering their own form of woody elegance. Slimline frames and 4-point bases were often paired with polypropylene or fabrics in refreshing shades. And retro-flavoured bucket chairs with a 21st century refresh had a distinctive presence.
For us Milan is alot about catching up with key suppliers, and seeing what exciting new product they have planned for the next few months. We had some great meetings and there’s some fantastic examples of very on-trend product due for release later this year.
What's hot now – flavours of Milan 2014…
